Avva, our Mother -----'Avva' -Review

Movie:- Avva
Starring:- Shruthi, Vijay, Smitha, Rangayana Raghu,Enagi Nataraj
Director:- Kavitha Lankesh
Music :- Issac Thomas Kottukapally

At the outset let us warn you that this is not your conventional magic for the masses cinema. Don't expect Vijay to perform his gravity defying stunts for the lead pair to titillate you with their songs. This is not an art film either. Kavitha Lankesh has skillfully managed to turn her father's novel Mussanjeya Katha Prasanga, into a meaningful yet entertaining film.

Sakavva (Shruthi) is a widow who lives with her daughter Savanthri(Smitha). Her single status and the need to protect the young Savanthri necessitates her to talk tough and live rough in the village. Though belonging to an upper caste, she faces opposition from her own community members particularly Baramanna (Rangayana Raghu) and his cronies. Baramanna tries every trick to lessen her influence among the villagers who go by sakavva's diktats because she is the principle moneylender in the village. Baramanna gets his chance when the secret love affair between Savanthri and Manju(Vijay), who is a lower caste, comes out in the open. How Sakavva manages this affair forms the climax.

Caste politics, the truth about life in the village, extra-marital affairs and more are revealed as the film develops. There are a few loose ends in the film. They may have been necessary elements in the book but drag the film unnecessarily in the second half. The explicit dialogues mouthed by Sakavva and Baramanna, though natural, has earned the film an ‘A' certificate. If you are not addicted to formula films, you will be able to appreciate Avva.
